CHARACTER BUILDING | 1 - THE GEORGIAN TOWNHOUSE

This is the first in a series of proposed postcards entitled Character Building, which promotes a simple technique of talking about architecture: asking "What is the building thinking?" By constructing a person out of the personality of architecture, everybody has the language to discuss architecture: simply, it is the same language used to talk about other people.

CHARACTER BUILDING | 1 - THE GEORGIAN TOWNHOUSE

We often apply human characteristics and emotions to objects and animals. This can be misleading, especially when attributing  pets with human thoughts, but it is an important technique in understanding man-made objects. It is a portal for seeing the designer’s intentions and personality.

Character Building is a reactionary way of talking about architecture. Instead of discussing the merits of the environmental strategy, the philosophical implications of the concept or the complex computational modelling involved in architectural projects, lets talk about buildings in personal terms. Lets construct a person out of the personality of a building:

What does the form and proportions say about the building?
What emotions does the building have throughout the day/year?
What does the level of decoration say about the building?
How does the building make you feel?
What does the building say about its designer(s)?
What makes the building unique?
Does does the site affect the building or vice versa?

or simply:
What is the architecture thinking?

Why not fill in the thought bubble on the front and send this postcard on. No prize for the best one; just the satisfaction of creativity...
