SOUL - SUBURBAN ON URBAN LIVING

Finally get to upload images from the RIBA/Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards. I won second prize in the community category. Not being bitter, but I was beaten my two masters students.

More to come.

Considering the theme of the competition ‘Suburban Urban’, the scheme concept came from the desire not to compromise the qualities of either condition. To urbanise suburbia would lose the desirable qualities of security, greenery and peace, whereas to suburbanise the city would lose its diversity, pace and excitement. Neither of these situations benefits anyone and so the concept is to create two complimentary but distinct zones within a single urban block, one on top of the other.

This is SOUL: Suburban On Urban Living.

1 - Invest Off-site: commercial ventures to buy green energy
2 - Reuse+Recycle Water: rainwater harvesting + greywater recycling
3 - Grown Your Own: pocket greenhouses + community gardens
4 - Reduce+Produce Energy: air/ground source heat pump + PV electricity production
5 - Flexible Design: expanding families + changing
needs
6 - Clever Transport: live/work + cycle/walk + convenient bus network
7 - People Power: engage + communicate + incentivise
8 - Material Efficiency: low carbon materials and structure sourced locally

P.S. Apologies for the extreme blogging laziness I have been experiencing since graduating - I've been travelling, volunteering and generally avoiding looking at screens. But now it's getting colder and wetter here much more is expected.
